Sod calculator
A 12 × 10 ft lawn needs 120 square feet of sod before an extra allowance. Draw an irregular lawn or enter its area, then add your supplier's pallet or roll coverage to calculate full packages.
Pallet and roll coverage varies by farm and product. Enter the coverage your supplier quotes. Waste is your project allowance, not a manufacturer recommendation.
How the sod calculator works
Needed area = measured area × (1 + extra ÷ 100). Packages = round up (needed area ÷ package coverage).
Worked example
For 120 sq ft with a 5% allowance, the required coverage is 126 sq ft. If a supplier quotes a package covering 100 sq ft, buy 2 packages: 200 sq ft. The 100 sq ft figure is an example, not a standard package size.
Reference quantities
Examples only, with no extra allowance: coverage by square foot, without package rounding.
| Area (sq ft) | Example quantity |
|---|---|
| 60 | 60 sq ft |
| 120 | 120 sq ft |
| 240 | 240 sq ft |
| 400 | 400 sq ft |
Before you buy
Measure only the area to be covered. Exclude beds, paths and existing planting. Confirm the grass variety, package coverage, freshness, unloading access and delivery timing with the farm. Soil preparation, fertilizer and irrigation are separate.
How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?
There is no universal coverage. Farms and product formats differ. Enter the coverage on your supplier's quote so the calculator rounds up the right number of pallets or rolls.
